Image Eine kleine Nachtmusik
Svenska Kammarorkestern / Petter Sundkvist

Edvard Grieg and his librettist Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson were both fascinated by a great period in Norway's past: the Viking Age, whose sagas, and fierce conflicts between Christianity and the old Norse religion, inspired all three of Grieg's works recorded here. Landkjenning depicts the moment when Olav Trygvason (960s- 1000) and his men sight the Norwegian coast for the first time on their voyage from England to Norway. As King from 995 to 1000, Olav worked single-mindedly to Christianise Norway. Conceived as a true Norwegian national opera, but left unfinished, the three scenes from Olav Trygvason explore pagan rituals and tributes to the Norse gods in anticipation of King Olav's entrance into the pagan temple.

Sung in English

In 1826 Felix Mendelssohn, aged only seventeen, composed his famous overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream. He wrote incidental music for the same play sixteen years later, and effortlessly recaptured the world of his youthful imagination. It sparkles and shimmers with its fairy magic even now. In this recording, the haunting Nocturne, the lively Scherzo and the famous Wedding March are interspersed with 'melodramas' accompanying spoken text from Shakespeare's much-loved play.

Arthur Rubinstein’s career extended well into his eighties, with his final recital taking place in London’s Wigmore Hall in June 1976 at the age of 87. In the late 1920s Rubinstein’s playing contained a joie de vivre that was missing from his later more serious and occasionally stolid recordings. This 1929 recording of Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is notable for Rubinstein’s overall fleetness and light-footed approach. The result is a refreshing and exciting reading. Rubinstein’s 1932 recording of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 is similarly characterised by a lack of weightiness and a freshness of approach that makes this reading a delight to hear. At the beginning, when Rubinstein plays the first statement of the theme in octaves, how beautifully and lyrically he shapes the phrases, and he keeps the underlying rhythm going in the following short cadenza so that it sounds an integral part of the movement.

'No summit of solemnity was inaccessible to her, and it was particularly music of spiritual meaning that seemed her most personal domain.' Thus wrote the distingushed conductor Bruno Walter about the contralto Kathleen Ferrier, whose highly individual, plangent voice, natural musicianship and high level of personal professionalism made her one of England's most popular singers during her all-too-brief career. This disc compiles a large number of her recordings of arias by Bach and Handel, to whose music she brought breadth, nobility and deep emotional commitment. She is accompanied by Sir Adrian Boult and Reginald Jacques, both major figures in England's post-war musical life. The Cantata recording appears on CD for the first time.

Image Symphonies Nos. 5 & 8
Schubert's Symphony in B minor was composed 1822 and only two of the expected four movements were finished, with part of a scherzo. These movements were not played in Schubert's life-time, but were rediscovered 43 years later and given their first performance in Vienna in 1865. The manuscript had been given by Schubert to his friend Josef Huettenbrenner as a present for his brother Anseim in Graz. The latter had later arranged a piano duet version of the movements, which he and his brother played together. For years the manuscript remained in Anseim Huettenbrenner's possession, its existence only known to a few, until it came to the attention of the conductor Johann Herbeck. Later writers have offered various explanations of the fragmentary nature of the symphony, none completely convincing. It has been suggested. improbably, that four movements were actually completed and sent to Anseim Huettenbrenner, who then lost two of the movements. More plausibly others have found a reason for not finishing the symphony in the composer's preoccupation with other work. Certainly Schubert could never be sure that larger scale works would ever be performed. It might be added that in 1822 Schubert contracted venereal disease and that the serious nature of this incurable disease and its probable fatal outcome affected him very deeply.
