Image Violin Concertos
After Liya Petrova won joint first prize at the 2016 Carl Nielsen International Violin Competition, jury President Nikolaj Znaider declared he had been “absolutely blown away by how she had absorbed the Nielsen violin concerto - how it had become hers”. From her debut album on Orchid Classics you can hear just why she made such an impression on those who heard her performance. The Strad praised the ‘iron will’ Petrova brought to Nielsen’s concerto; a fortitude which is matched on this recording by the sensitivity in her approach to the first violin concerto of Sergei Prokofiev.

The great inventor and futurist Nikola Tesla, from whom the Tesla Quartet takes its name, talked of the invisible yet inseparable ties which bind people together. Through performance, teaching and outreach, the Tesla Quartet has for ten years strived to tap into this palpable feeling, using music to create meaningful connections with their audiences. Celebrating this first decade together, the quartet’s debut album draws upon the need for reflection, and to look upon the familiar in a new light. None did this more effectively than Igor Stravinsky, two centuries after Haydn pioneered the string quartet, and Ravel’s masterful contribution takes its place as a staple of the repertoire.

Jiyoon Lee was joint first prize winner of the 2016 Carl Nielsen International Violin Competition, with jury President Nikolaj Znaider exclaiming that ‘her playing was immediately a breath of fresh air…she is a terrific violinist and I can see her going very far…’ Such praise has marked Jiyoon out as a genuine talent to watch, already being engaged as soloist with the Swedish Chamber, Seoul Philharmonic and Philharmonia orchestras. This, her debut recording, brings the much loved violin concerto of Erich Korngold together with the lesser known, highly demanding work of Carl Nielsen. It was Jiyoon’s interpretation of the latter which led Znaider to continue ‘She has lightness in her playing and yet she is a musician who takes very seriously her craft.’

Image Piano Trios
Trio con Brio Copenhagen

From the first note, Trio con Brio exudes class … both explosive and exquisitely intimate – aspects that this performance delivers with compelling panache.”
Strad Magazine, Joanne Talbot (Marts 2016)

" excellent performance all round, showcasing an airtight ensemble, but also these Danish-based musicians’ flair for colouristic detail. They are consistently compelling, whether in the howling opening statement, the tender dips into lyricism or the tightly coiled whirring that constitutes the Scherzo….any group would be hard-pressed to imitate this blend of verve and poise.”
Gramophone, Hannah Nepil (Februar 2016)

The award-winning Trio con Brio Copenhagen releases an album of Tchaikovsky and Smetana Piano Trios, works which are widely acknowledged as milestones in the chamber music repertoire.

"One of the greatest performances of chamber music I've ever encountered ..." Ken Keaton, American Record Guide, on an earlier album.

Trio con Brio Copenhagen has won most of the international competitions for piano trios, including the ARD (Munich), Vittorio Gui (Florence) and Norway's Trondheim Competition.

Image The Grand Organ of Temple Church
Roger Sayer is at the forefront of British choral and organ music, recognised both as a prize-winning organist, and as an acclaimed Choral Director with some of the UK’s finest choirs. Sayer has even performed as the organ soloist in Hans Zimmer’s Oscar-nominated score for the film Interstellar. Mozart called the organ the “King of Instruments”, and this release certainly showcases its majestic qualities. Mendelssohn’s Organ Sonata No.1 was inspired by Bach, and exudes an air of gravitas and profundity whilst enjoying the organ’s variety of sonorities. Bach also influenced 20th-century composers Sigfrid Karg-Elert and Max Reger, both of whom followed in Bach’s footsteps by moving to Leipzig. Karg-Elert’s Symphonic Chorale is based on Jesu meine Freude by Johann Cruger, and on the notes BACH (B flat, A, C and B natural), while Reger’s chorale-based Fantasia is a work of great virtuosity. The collection ends with a memorable sonata by Liszt-pupil Julius Reubke.

Image Four Elements Volume 1: Water
Celebrated Japanese pianist Yu Kosuge embarks on an exciting project: four releases inspired by the Greek concept of the four elements, Water, Fire, Air, Earth. Many composers have been drawn to the properties of these elements when seeking inspiration for their music, but Kosuge’s theme goes deeper, dating back to her successful Beethoven cycle: “When you understand that Shakespeare’s plays, read ardently by Beethoven, refer to Greek mythology, or that Beethoven himself composed some works based on the Prometheus myth, you would know that an artist who is searching for human nature would surely look to Greek mythology or philosophy...” In Water, Yu Kosuge interprets a rich array of repertoire, from Liszt and Wagner to acclaimed contemporary composer Dai Fujikura. The ‘barcarolle’ takes its rocking rhythms from the motion of a boat: we hear examples by Chopin and Fauré, as well as Venetian Gondola ‘Songs Without Words’ by Mendelssohn.

Image Variations Sérieuses
Award-winning Armenian pianist Lilit Grigoryan explores the art of the variation in her new recording with Orchid Classics entitled VARIATIONS SERIÉUSES. In stunning interpretations combining both virtuosity and integrity, Lilit Grigoryan takes the listener on a journey through this art form, from Busoni’s breathtaking re-imagining of the majestic Chaconne from J.S. Bach’s D minor violin Partita, to Beethoven’s 32 Variations, which range between extreme technical difficulty and expressive moments of quiet simplicity, to Mendelssohn’s grand Variations sérieuses. Alongside these giants of the repertoire are some more rarely-heard gems: Bizet’s sinuous and innovative chromatic variations, and youthful late-Romantic colour from Polish composer Szymanowski.

Image Piano Trios Vol. 2
Following a highly praised first instalment, Trio con Brio Copenhagen continue their journey through the piano trios of Beethoven with Volume II of their twentieth anniversary cycle.

On this recording the youthful Op.1 No.2 is coupled with the trio in E flat major, Op.70 No.2, an altogether more intimate work and one full of the composer’s natural warmth.

Trio con Brio Copenhagen has been at the forefront of Scandinavia’s music scene for almost twenty years, receiving many of the most prestigious prizes for chamber music. The group has also established an enviable reputation internationally, playing regularly in venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw and London’s Wigmore Hall.

"Matilda Lloyd is a fast rising star of the trumpet world, having won the BBC Young Musician of the year Brass Final as well as the Eric Aubier International Trumpet Competition, and having made an impressive solo debut at the BBC Proms. Matilda’s debut album reflects her desire to broaden the trumpet repertoire, with no fewer than three works recorded for the first time, by composers Giles Swayne, Deborah Pritchard and Alex Woolf. Also included on the recording are forgotten works of the 20th and 21st centuries by Jacques Casterede and Raymond Gallois Montbrun alongside staples of the trumpet repertoire, such as Enescu’s Legende and Peter Maxwell Davies’s impressive showpiece, Sonata for Trumpet and Piano Op.1."

For his latest album Huw performs a programme that is as varied as it is popular, and for which he commissioned several brand new arrangements by John Lenehan, including Debussy’s ‘The Girl with the Flaxon Hair’. Described as “an amazing talent“ by Gustavo Dudamel, Spanish violinist Francisco Fullana will release his debut recording in March 2018 with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Entitled Through the Lens of Time, the recording brings together four modern perspectives reimagining the Baroque tradition: a dialogue that prompts both composers and performers to explore musical giants of the past and place them in their own lives.
The recording begins with Max Richter’s daring reworking of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and continues with three other works , by Schnittke, Isang Yun and Salvador Brotons, that each provide a unique take on the legacy of the Baroque period.

Image Mathias Kjøller
Danish clarinettist Mathias Kjøller, himself a laureate in the Carl Nielsen Competition and former principal of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, has collaborated with several highly acclaimed musicians for this recording of chamber music works. The album is a testament to the sound worlds created for the clarinet by Schumann, Reinecke, Debussy, Berg and Corigliano. The connection between composers is foremost an emotional, and very melancholic one, ranging from the highly expressive Three Romances by Schumann to Alban Berg’s Adagio, with Corigliano’s Soliloquy serving as a sorrowful coda having been written in memoriam of the composer’s father.

She has since built an extensive career and an enviable reputation as one of today's leading young cellists, most recently stepping in for Mischa Maisky for a performance of Yusupov's Cello Concerto, with the composer himself conducting. Here, together with long time collaborator Maria Belooussova, Bogdanovic tackles one of the major works of the repertoire in Rachmaninov's sonata, said by the composer to contain equal roles for both cello and piano. The pair also perform 12 Album Leaves, as well as the Ballade op.4, by Reinhold Glière.

Image Requiem
This work by self-proclaimed "non-composer" Christopher Wood pays homage to the enormous grief felt around the UK following the passing of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 2002. A former cancer surgeon who now develops life-saving cancer drugs, Christopher Wood is a pharmaceutical entrepreneur who had, until 2002, never composed a note of music. But when the Queen Mother passed away, Wood was moved by the thousands of people who queued for hours to pay their respects, and felt a strong connection to their grief and sadness, but also their honour, gratitude and patriotic pride. Having been raised in a musical family - Wood’s mother was a soprano in the Welsh National Opera chorus, and he has sung in choirs for his whole life - it is perhaps not surprising that he turned to music as a form of expression. Written around a busy schedule managing a US pharmaceutical company, Wood’s Requiem took eight years to compose. The Requiem was finally recorded and premiered at St John’s Smith Square, London, in 2012.

Imagine a composer, a woman, living during the classical times of late 18th century France. Her country is torn by a terrible revolution and grand revolutionary ideas. It is astonishing that France, who produced great composers throughout music history, failed to produce a great figure during the classical times. Or maybe it has and we don’t know about it. It is hard not to see the similarities between Chopin’s Revolutionary Etude and Montgéroult’s Etude No.107, or between the F minor Fugue and Mendelssohn’s Fugue Op.35/1. Hélène de Montgéroult wrote and published all her music between 1795 and 1812, either before or just around the time Chopin and Mendelssohn were born. It is fitting that the ideas of equality of the French Revolution coincided with the life of a great woman composer. It is fitting that her importance and influence in the history of music be recognized and the oversight corrected.

Image The Seafarer
The initial idea to commission Sally Beamish to transcribe a trio version of Debussy's La Mer emerged from speculative discussion that took place during a car journey at the 2012 Lincolnshire International Chamber Music Festival, very shortly after we'd officially decided to form Trio Apaches. We were a little nervous when we first broached the idea with Sally - surely the notion of arranging a piece so famous for its orchestral colour would be laughed out of town? - but, with a little work, we persuaded her to take the plunge (forgive the pun). Even then, we didn't expect it to work within the timeframe we'd set for ourselves, but Sally amazed us by making space in her frantic schedule to produce her transcription within 12 months. And what a work it is! She's managed to create something that's taken a life of its own; one that both complements the original score and also communicates entirely independently of it. We met with her in July 2013 to work through the first draft, suggesting alterations here and there, and gave the world premiere at LICMF 2013 on August 16th. The audience reaction proved what we already knew - that we'd struck gold with this particular combination of piece and arranger. Since then we've performed it numerous times and we're utterly convinced it'll become a staple part of the trio repertoire. Well, it will once our period of exclusivity has expired, that is.

Image Bach to the Future
The 21st Century has so far been witness to many curious developments - the popularity of soundbite social media, the wearing of Crocs as an acceptable form of fashion, TVs that do almost everything bar cook a full English, increasingly unpredictable weather patterns - but by far the strangest of all has been the unstoppable rise of the autobiography, most often penned (as it were) by footballers, pop-stars and reality TV characters who've barely emerged from puberty. Well, my terrible teens are long gone but I still like to think of myself as a young musician, so, for the sake of social solidarity, I've opted for an 'if you can't beat 'em join 'em' attitude and have chosen for this disc - the first mixed repertoire recording over which I've had complete control - a series of pieces that have been particularly significant in my life and career to date. Of course, the beauty of musical autobiographies is that they are, at least when confined to the space of a single CD, mercifully short. No inane descriptions of breakfast cereals or days in the park to be found here and, booklet notes aside, you're safe from terrible prose. So I hope you'll forgive my self-indulgence and simply enjoy what is, I believe, a series of great musical masterpieces, from which you'll inevitably garner your own context and meaning.

Image 3CD-BOX: Song Cycles
In Die Schöne Müllerin - the beautiful maid of the mill - we are told a story. It's a straightforward tale of a young man looking for love and being disappointed, but Schubert and Müller have here created a work of huge power and depth, where we explore this tragedy with great empathy and pity, but also with our hearts full of despair at our own inability to alter the relentless logic of fate.

This stunning new transcription by Mythos of Stravinsky's Petrushka has to be heard to be believed - marvel at the amazing sounds that emanate from these two accordions!

Mythos are performing these works regularly in concerts and the Duo has recently made its Carnegie Hall debut in the USA

Russian masterworks transcribed and performed by the award-winning Danish bayan duo Mythos, winner of First Prize in the Danish Radio Chamber Music Competition 2011 and First Prize in the Almere International Chamber Music Competition

"Of course, we knew the fully orchestrated, brilliant score of Stravinsky's Petrouchka intimately in advance, but until today I for one had no idea as to the wealth of worlds those notes could express, what span, musically and narratively, this composition could cover. MYTHOS' shimmering, colourful and eternally suggestive Petroushka transcended its arrangement, no less" Michael Bo - Politiken

Image War Sonatas (The)
5/5 i DN

(Dagens Nyheter)

Boris Giltburg (piano)

Boris Giltburg was selected by the great Zubin Mehta as the winner of the first Pnina Salzman Prize in Israel 2011 and has won many other prestigious prizes, including the top prize and Audience Prize in the Santander International Piano Competition, and second prize and Best Classical Concerto in the Artur Rubinstein Competition.

An exceptionally busy and versatile performer, he recently replaced Denis Matsuev at one day's notice performing Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No.3 on tour in Germany.

This CD is the culmination of many months of constant performance and study of Prokofiev's War Sonatas, and the highly detailed and insightful booklet notes have also been written by Boris.

'It isn't every day young pianists are compared to the great Richter, but Boris Giltburg has been on more than one occasion. In a sense, you can hear why: his Chopin Ballades at the Wigmore sounded gloriously poetic and free as he pushed and pulled at their tempi. It was old-school, but magical and quite ravishing too.'
